As of December 15, 2025, a total of 8.2 million tons of coal has been transshipped through the containerized transportation terminal at the Shiveekhuren border crossing, located in Gurvantes soum, Umnugovi Province.
In an effort to expand coal export capacity at Mongolia’s southern border crossings, Mongolyn Alt (MAK) LLC, in collaboration with eight companies operating in the Narynsukhait coal deposit cluster, implemented a comprehensive smart terminal project based on driverless 5G and automated guided vehicle (AGV) technologies. The terminal was successfully commissioned in 2023.

The Shiveekhuren Terminal leverages a 5G network to enable fully autonomous transportation using advanced AGV systems operating on magnetically guided roads. Equipped with an intelligent gate management system, the terminal has an annual export capacity of 18 million tons of coal.
Once operating at full capacity, the terminal is expected to significantly reduce coal loss and environmental pollution, thereby minimizing its environmental footprint. In the longer term, the project creates favorable conditions for increasing total exports through the Shiveekhuren border crossing to as much as 40 million tons per year.

Looking ahead, the terminal’s capacity is planned to be expanded in phases, with the next stage—including the full deployment of 5G-based transportation—scheduled for commissioning in May of next year.
